How to Inspect a Used Excavator Remotely When You Cannot Visit China

Buying a used excavator from overseas can help reduce equipment costs, but it also creates an important challenge: how can you confirm the real condition of the machine when you cannot inspect it in person?Product photos and a short working video are not enough to evaluate a used excavator. This guide explains the most important steps for inspecting a used excavator remotely before importing it from China.

1. Confirm That the Excavator Really Exists

The first step is to confirm that the machine shown in the advertisement is the actual machine available for sale.Ask the seller to provide a continuous, unedited video showing:

  • The complete exterior of the excavator
  • The seller or sales representative standing beside the machine
  • A paper showing your name or the current date
  • The model plate and serial number
2. Request a Cold-Start Video

A cold-start video is one of the most useful ways to evaluate the engine condition of a used excavator.During the cold start, pay attention to:

  • How quickly the engine starts
  • Whether the starter motor turns normally
  • The color and amount of exhaust smoke
  • Abnormal engine noise
  • Unstable idle speed
  • Warning lights on the dashboard

A small amount of smoke may appear when an older diesel engine starts, especially in cold weather. However, continuous heavy white, blue or black smoke may indicate engine, fuel system or combustion problems.A seller who only provides videos after the machine has already been warmed up may be hiding cold-start difficulties.

3. Inspect the Engine Compartment

The engine compartment should be shown clearly from several angles.Ask for close-up photos and videos of:

  • The engine
  • Engine identification plate
  • Hydraulic pump
  • Hoses and connectors
  • Fuel system
  • Oil filters

Look for visible oil leakage, damaged hoses, loose connectors, corrosion or signs that major components have recently been removed.Fresh paint inside the engine compartment is not always a problem, but it should not be used to cover leaks, cracks or previous repairs.

4. Test the Hydraulic System After Warming Up
  • Boom lifting and lowering
  • Arm extension and retraction
  • Bucket opening and closing
  • Left and right swing
  • Forward and reverse travel
  • Steering movements
  • Combined hydraulic movements
5. Inspect the Undercarriage

The undercarriage is one of the most expensive parts of a crawler excavator to repair or replace, so the seller should provide close-up videos of both the left and right sides, clearly showing the track shoes, track chains, pins and bushings, sprockets, front idlers, track rollers, carrier rollers, track tension and travel motors.
Buyers should look for uneven wear, broken track shoes, sharp sprocket teeth, excessive track sag and oil leakage around the travel motors. It is also important to compare both sides, as significantly different wear may indicate uneven working conditions or previous repairs. Photos taken from a distance are not sufficient, so detailed close-up videos are necessary to evaluate the real condition of the undercarriage.

6. Verify the Year and Working Hours

The working hours displayed on the dashboard should be treated as a reference, not the only proof of the machine’s condition.Ask for photos of:

  • Machine identification plate
  • Serial number
  • Engine identification plate
  • Dashboard hours
  • Controller or monitor information, where available

The displayed hours should also be compared with the physical wear of the machine. For example, a machine showing very low working hours but having heavily worn pedals, loose pins and a severely worn undercarriage should be investigated carefully.

7. Arrange a Live Video Inspection

A live video inspection through WhatsApp, WeChat or another video platform is more reliable than only receiving pre-recorded videos.During the live call, the buyer can ask the seller to perform specific actions in real time, such as:

  • Start the engine
  • Show the machine serial number
  • Open the engine compartment
  • Operate the boom and bucket
  • Test the travel function
  • Show the undercarriage
  • Display the dashboard
Final Advice

Buying a used excavator remotely does not mean that the buyer must rely only on the seller’s description.Detailed videos, cold-start testing, hydraulic performance checks, live video calls and professional inspection reports can significantly reduce purchasing risk.A reliable seller should be willing to show not only the good condition of the machine, but also its defects. Used equipment does not need to look perfect. What matters is that the buyer understands the real condition before making payment. If you cannot visit China to inspect the excavator in person, send us the model you need, your budget and destination port. We can provide detailed photos, cold-start videos, complete working tests, live video inspections before shipment.
